New rules being pushed forward by the commission still need formal approval from the European Parliament. But Neelie Kroes, a European Commission vice president said: “Opening up public data means opening up business opportunities, creating jobs and building communities. I welcome the Council’s agreement to this culture change.”
Speaking at the launch of a new global Research Data Alliance, she said that we are entering a new “era of open science”, which will be “good for citizens, good for scientists and good for society”.
Because those tools can take us into a new era: the era of open science. I’m in no doubt we are entering that phase: and that the impact will be good for citizens, good for scientists and good for society.

Internationally, the World Intellectual Property Organisation was looking at a range of new copyright exceptions and limitations. Nationally, an increasing number of EU countries were recognising the need for reforms while testing new ideas in this field. But it was suggested that a common European solution was needed to avoid fragmentation and to seize benefits for a European Digital Single Market.University World News.
